10 Wine Refrigerators We Don’t Recommend – and Why

No Reviews!

Sorry, we won’t be reviewing you!

As we mentioned in our article on How We Review Wine Refrigerators, we pass up a lot more units than we review.  Our philosophy to wine refrigerator reviews is simple.  It’s hard enough to make a choice with so many options.  Why waste your time reviewing wine refrigerators that have a high chance of disappointment?

With any manufactured and shipped product, there will be problems with some units.  We don’t expect perfection.  But when you look across multiple sources and see a pattern of not-so-minor problems, it’s best to find another unit.

We thought it would be interesting to show you some of the ones we’ve passed up and tell you why.  It will help you understand how we think.

You will notice that most of the wine refrigerators we do review get good grades.  That’s not because we are easy graders – it’s because a lot of students can’t get into the class!

Note we are not saying these are all bad units!  Some of them are probably just fine.  But a major filter for us is looking for positive consumer feedback across multiple sites.  If more than half the feedback is negative, we keep looking.

There are some wine coolers that looks promising but there’s not enough supporting evidence yet.  We put them on the “Watch List” for a possible review later.

Note the predominance of low cost, countertop units in the list.  Wine refrigerators cost less than ever, but the very low cost ones have inconsistent quality.  Look carefully in that price range and category.

Bonus:  we are adding more coolers we won’t review so you can see more than 10.  Some are tough choices as comments are very mixed, but when extremely negative experiences are there more than 20% of the time, it’s a red flag for us.  There are products out there with less risk, why not go with one of them?

Sunpentown WC-1271 12 BottlesCountertopVery positive comments from new owners but many comments of total failure from people who've had for a year.
Cuisinart CWC-1600 8 or 16 BottlesCountertopMany complaints of early failure and noise
Cuisinart CWC-1200DZ 12 BottlesCountertopMany complaints of early failures (less than a year) intermingled with some reporting no problems. Too many problems to be a CoolChoice™.
Danby DWC1233BL-SC 12 BottlesCountertopEarly failures, noise. Unfortunately a lot of the inexpensive, small countertop units have similar problems. Be especially careful in this category and price range.
Koolatron WC12G 12 BottlesCountertopA lot of units have been damaged in shipping. Also reports of temperature control inconsistency.
Cuisinart CWC-600 6 BottlesCountertopMany early failures.
Frigidaire FFWC38F6L 38 BottlesUndercounterMixed results - some people are happy, but too many reports of shelves falling out, large temperature variations, and premature failure.
Haier HVCE24CBH 50 BottlesUndercounterLarge temperature variation, early failures, noisy
Haier HVTS04ABB4 BottlesCountertopInadequate cooling for white and even some red wine drinkers
Vinotemp VT60GNV/W60 BottlesUndercounterFrequent problems, very difficult to get repairs and support, large temperature variation, shelves provide inadequate support
EdgeStar TWR215ESS 21 BottlesUndercounterWe really want to like this one - dual zone, good capacity and price - and a little over half the reviews we've seen were positive - but a LOT of people report 6 - 12 month failure of one or both zones. You don't need the hassle.
